Mountain Lions in PCR

Occasionally tracking dogs can be seen on PCR property. These dogs are in pursuit of a mountain lion or bear reported in the area. These dogs are not dangerous and are NOT there to hunt, but to drive potentially harmful animals from around cabins where they may come in contact with pets and people. We would like to clarify our position on this matter to ensure everyone’s safety and cooperation.
The PCR Board and most residents support efforts to remove predatory wildlife from the immediate residential area. Unlike other wildlife that may retreat when encountered, these predators can pose a significant risk to pets and their owners. Our primary focus is the safety of our residents and their guests.
We ask for your patience if working dogs briefly appear on your property cameras. Their presence generally indicates they are tracking a predator that has already passed through; the dogs are highly trained, friendly toward people, non-destructive and will move through the area quickly.
The handler has committed to avoiding intentional trespassing on individual lots. However, if a predator is treed, the handler may need to retrieve the dogs from nearby areas to resolve the situation safely but will do so from PCR common roads. This individual also proactively notifies the Board when a pursuit enters the PCR area so that timely alerts can be shared with the community.
We believe this service provides a vital safety benefit considering the alternatives, and we hope to avoid any actions that might jeopardize its availability. These guidelines are also in line with DWR and DNR policies. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to a Board member. Thank you.
